EU to temporarily ease Tariff measures on certain Pakistani products? | Print |

Certain EU Member States are proposing to temporarily ease Tariff Duties on certain Pakistani textile products in order to help the country to recover from the devastating floods that it has suffered recently.

However, there appears to be some opposition not only from states in the region that export the same products but also the European Association of Textile Retailers (EURATEX) and certain Member States who are strongly opposed to any such measures. The EU will discuss details at a summit in October and then if it is decided to proceed with the measures, the EU will have to seek a WTO waiver to ease tariffs on the products. Even if it gets to that stage, there is likely to be considerable opposition from India. If the EU pursues this then there is concern that the Free Trade Agreement negotiations between the EU and India will be delayed even further.
