International Trade Solutions reported in October of last year that the EU and South Korea had agreed on a Free Trade Agreement that would significantly increase trade between the two entities. The text of the FTA was initialled between the European Commission and South Korea on 15 October 2009 but was finally signed on 6 October 2010 in Brussels.

ITS reported last month that the EU had suffered a significant defeat at the World Trade Organisation. The WTO decided that the EU had breached its obligations under the GATT 94 International Technology Agreement (ITA) by levying customs duties on certain technology products including multi-functioning devices, monitors and set top boxes. The EU has decided not to appeal against this ruling.

WTO rules that EU Tariffs on certain high-tech goods are not allowed under GATT 1994

The WTO Dispute Settlement Body recently ruled that EU Tariffs on certain High-Tech goods were in violation of the EC’s obligations under the Information Technology Agreement (ITA). The United States, Japan and Chinese Taipei claimed that the EC had signed up to allow certain information technology products duty-free access into the EU and that the imposition of import Tariff’s was subsequently prohibited by the ITA.

Mercosur and Egypt sign Free Trade Agreement

11 August 2010

After six years of talks, Mercosur and Egypt have signed a Free Trade Agreement. The Agreement will immediately eliminate tariffs on butter, maize, metals, oils, valves and wheat. Duties on milk and industrial products will be phased out within the next four years while remaining tariffs will be phased out over a period of eight to ten years.
