Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) is a certification regime whereby accredited entities improve the security of their supply chains and customs compliance in exchange for various trade incentives.
AEO is the European Communities' response to the increasing challenges facing the international supply chain post-9/11 and the London and Madrid bombings. AEO should be viewed in conjunction with other global initiatives such as Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT) in the USA and the development of the "SAFE" framework of standards in the World Customs Organisation.
The true advantages of AEO for importers will come in to effect when the Modernised Customs Code (MCC) is implemented but should be a serious consideration for businesses that are CFSP approved or caught by the Senior Accounting Officer (SAO) provisions (i.e. turnover?£200m).
