Correctly determining the “economic nationality” of your goods is one of the most important responsibilities of any importer because the origin determines:
Whether your goods require import licences, quotas or anti-dumping duties
Whether your overseas customers can benefit from lower duty rates
Whether there are any prohibitions or restrictions on the import or export of your goods
The origin rules are complex and may have little to do with where your goods are shipped or purchased from. As a result of globalisation most products are made up of materials and processes carried out in various countries.
