EU instigates radiation contamination checks on imports of Japanese food products

28 March 2011

Following the continuing problems at the Fukushima nuclear plant following the Tsunami that hit Japan, the European Commission has become concerned at the levels of radiation in certain Japanese food products such as milk and spinach may be harmful to public and animal safety in the EU.

Food and animal feed products originating from twelve prefectures will have to be tested by Japanese authorities prior to export and they will also undergo further testing once they reach the EU.

Products originating from the other Japanese prefectures will face random testing in the EU
