Payment of Duty Demands by Deferment Account

08 December 2011

Covering letters and reminder letters for post clearance customs demands (C18’s) will with immediate effect include the e-mail address of the appropriate HMRC contact to enable businesses to send e-mail requests for HMRC to debit the amounts owed from the appropriate deferment account.

This is a facilitative measure to help cut down the time effort for the request to be made in writing.

We recommend businesses review the legal grounds for any post clearance demands, the calculation of those demands and whether there are any grounds for mitigating these demands before agreeing to pay. Businesses can ask for a further review of a demand decision and/ or appeal the matter to an independent tax tribunal. Please contact us if you would like to explore this matter further.
