Frequently Asked Questions

Doesn't my freight forwarder look after this for me?

Your forwarder submits information to HM Customs on your behalf, but you as the importer are legally responsible for the accuracy of the import declaration and compliance with the customs obligations.

It is unlikely that the forwarder can meet these obligations without clear instructions from you on the nature of product, how the import value is determined and an explanation of your whole supply chain.

Furthermore, a significant amount of customs planning takes place post import, after their involvement is complete.

My goods have been cleared through customs. Do I still have a risk?

The customs authorities only carry out minimal checks on goods and documentation when imports are cleared at port (or airport). Most control is exercised through visits to the importer to examine procedures and records.

Regulations stipulate that you must keep all customs records for 4 years (6 for VAT) to enable reviews to work.

Due to resource constraints, it is likely that HM Customs will only carry out a visit every 3-5 years, but any action will have retrospective effect going back three years.

I am interested in exploring this matter in more detail but don't know how material this is of much about customs duty matters. What should I do next?
